Special DIY: Make a shopping bag out of an umbrella

shoppingbagdfeat

Hello again dearies and welcome to another DIY episode! I hope this week is treating you right and you are ready to plunge into the wavy world or creativity.

For today I decided to show you how I turned an umbrella into a perfectly respectable shopping bag.

I guess we’ve all experienced the dreadful case of a broken umbrella (especially when you needed one so badly) and felt wrong to just throw it away because you still loved its fabric’s pattern. So why not recycle and turn it into a shopping bag?

Keep reading if you want to know more 😉

What you need:

  • a broken umbrella
  • a sewing machine
  • thread and scissors
  • lots of imagination

What you need to do:

I for one have looked at this DIY project as a special one, mostly because it requires a bit more effort (because of the sewing machine) and a bit more imagination than the regular ones.

But first things first, let’s not panic, OK? 😛

Take your broken umbrella and just detach the fabric from it. If you find it easier, use the scissors.

Next in line is the creativity part – just spread the fabric and take a hard look at it. What can you do with it? What kind of design would you fancy?

When you decided on the design just take the scissors and cut away. Cut away so you can reach the desired form and then step quickly into the world of sewing.

Sew the fabric parts accordingly, baring in mind to keep two narrow stripes of fabric in order to create the handles of your shopping bag.

I decided to take an extra step and used the umbrella’s cover to make a pocket and sew it to the front of my shopping bag.

And what do you know? That’s basically it!  You have a new shopping bag that you can use next time you are in town shopping for clothes or even for groceries.

This way you will spend less on plastic or paper bags, recycle (thus helping Mother Earth and yourself) and keep the umbrella you love in a different form 😛

Although this DIY is a bit more difficult to make, this doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Plus the possibilities of creating various designs are endless. Practically you will see a round & plain piece of fabric turn into a whole new thing – a shopping bag in this case (which is also waterproof :-P).

Please tell me what you think about this new DIY project in the comment section below or on my social media accounts, and send me your pictures if you decide to re-create it.

Have a great day and wonderful weekend (brace yourself … it’s coming!) 🙂
